Dying Orchid

by Mildred Espree

This Monday morning,

I nursed my dying orchid

with bark chip, charcoal, soil.

This, their medicine

and my gentle caress.

Their music — My faithfulness

in another rare bloom.

In this room of breathing greenery

I often forget my own sickness,

and remember the simplicity

of this cycle, this circle that

brings home crowned holiness,

as my soul transforms

dimentionally.

I, who on this journey.

have grown intenional in my end times,

finding comfort in the

endlessly primordial.

Washing Their Feet

by Mildred Espree

for Jared Hilary

Basil and Lemongrass.

Garlic and the Greenest Tea,

Oregano steeped in purest Olive Oil

penetrating from the inside out,

for my son who was Born to Overcome.

For immuniy to demons within and without.

Because sometimes what goes unsaid

is too deep, too painful, too true,

for the Joy inside I feel

when you smile and close your eyes

Despite Everything.

I saw it in our picture, once,

and again

when you held her hand on your wedding day,

One day,

when that crown I gave you can no longer

Hide itself.

You’ll know more,

realize deeply

what mere words

can’t say

and vibrate with each breath,

With your soul sight,

Our heritage

the one that thrived on

teaching you

how to wash

their feet.
